Why does my astro photo look like black noise?

You pointed your camera at a nebula for three minutes and got back what looks like a bag of static. That's not a failed session — it's every single sub, from every beginner, ever.

One frame is supposed to look like nothing

Open a single sub-exposure ("sub" — one raw frame out of the many you shoot in a session) straight off your DSLR or dedicated astro camera, and it looks close to black, with a faint grey haze of static. That is completely normal. It is not a sign your session failed.

The reason is dynamic range (the span between the darkest and brightest values a sensor can record). A galaxy or nebula's real light is a tiny fraction of what your sensor can measure — often a difference of only a handful of pixel values out of thousands. Your camera did record that light. It's genuinely in the file. But at the file's native brightness scale, that signal is invisible, buried under the sensor's own read noise and whatever light pollution leaked in. Look at a single raw sub on your phone or laptop's default image viewer and you're seeing the data at the wrong brightness curve entirely — like judging a photograph by squinting at it through frosted glass.

Integration is what actually reveals the image

The fix isn't a different setting on your camera — it's combining data. Integration (stacking many subs into one combined image) works because the real signal — your target's actual light — lands in the same place in every frame, while noise is random and lands differently each time. Add enough frames together and the signal builds up while the noise partially cancels out, raising the target above the noise floor. That's the entire job of stacking software like DeepSkyStacker or Siril: align every sub precisely, then combine them.

Even after stacking, the result still looks dim and flat until you stretch it (remapping the image's brightness curve so the faint signal becomes visible to the human eye, instead of being compressed into a few dark pixel values). Stretching is where a stacked-but-still-grey frame turns into visible nebulosity or galaxy structure. Skip either step — stack too few subs, or don't stretch — and you'll still be staring at what looks like noise, even though the underlying data may be perfectly fine.

The single most common reason beginners give up on astrophotography before ever seeing their first nebula is opening one sub, seeing static, and assuming the night was wasted. It almost never was. Load your subs into free stacking software, let it align and combine them, apply even a rough auto-stretch, and the picture usually changes completely — a hazy shape, a hint of color, sometimes the whole target snapping into view. Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for a single sub-exposure to look completely black?

Yes. A single sub straight off a DSLR or astro camera looks like near-black noise even when it captured real signal, because faint deep-sky light is a tiny fraction of the sensor's dynamic range. It only becomes visible after stacking many subs together and stretching the result.

How many subs do I need before I can tell if a target came out?

You usually can't judge from one frame at all. Stack even 10-15 subs and do a rough auto-stretch in free software like Siril or DeepSkyStacker before deciding whether the session worked.

What actually means I need to reshoot, not just reprocess?

Star trailing or visibly oval stars from tracking failure, severely under-exposed data with almost no signal above the noise floor even after stacking, wrong settings that clipped or entirely missed the target, and sessions where cloud or dew ruined most of the subs. Noise, mild vignetting, gradients and hot pixels are all fixable in processing.
